Air pollution, besides being an established culprit in increasing global warming pushing the world towards disaster, it is also devastating for human health.
The vehicular emissions, especially those run by diesel, armed with damaging particles are found to ‘clog arteries’! The particles combine with the fats that generally clog the arteries to trigger heart disease risks.
According to a new study, the diesel-fume particles along with the artery-clogging fats act in unison to activate genes causing potentially dangerous inflammation of the blood vessels.
And people who have low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol - the artery-blocking disease - seem to be more vulnerable to such an environment; the impact of diesel particles and cholesterol fats combined being found to be much greater than what each in isolation can do.
An expert in nanomedicine, the lead researcher Dr Andre Nel said,
Their combination creates a dangerous synergy that wreaks cardiovascular havoc far beyond what’s caused by the diesel or cholesterol alone.
Though, the exact way of air pollutants’ cardiovascular injury is not yet clear, the damaging impacts of the chemical-coated particles are well known and are enough to cause fear and health crisis among those living in such polluted air.
The chemicals of the particles does not only damage tissue, but also cause inflammation of the nose and lungs, which in turn may trigger heart attack or stroke.
Can we also blame the increasing trend of heart diseases and strokes on diesel pollution one breaths in day-in-and-out, besides life styles and food habits?
