It came as surprise to the medical fraternity when a Danish Study concluded with substantial evidence that DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) makes one susceptible to a heart attack. Blood clots in arteries were a widely accepted cause for heart attacks but clots in the vein were seen as no potential threat. The Danish study proved that such a vein condition boosted the risk of either a heart attack or a stroke by about 90 percent within a year compared to people without clots.
At Denmark’s Aarhus Hospital where this breakthrough study took place, the leading researcher, Henrik Sorensen pointed out,
We do not know how vein clots, heart attacks and strokes are linked, but obesity could be a key factor.
Such a finding surprised many because the two conditions were believed to be largely unrelated and quite different from each other.
Extensive research was undertaken like last 20 years of medical databases of Denmark were analyzed. They excluded patients with heart disease and then the risk of heart attacks and strokes was gauged in more than 25,000 patients with deep vein thrombosis.
Such breakthroughs can be unnerving for some but they work towards a healthier and more aware mankind.
