antidepressants-helping-heart-patients-in-unusual-way_9

If you have recently suffered from a severe heart attack or angina, and certain complications cropped up following it, don’t be surprised if your doctor prescribe you some ‘antidepressant’ doses as curative measures - irrespective of if you are suffering from depression!

Just trust him, as you can actually avoid the complications by this, perhaps, most unlikely medications.

Researchers have recently discovered that a particular class of antidepressants — called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs - can keep platelets from sticking together.

It is surely having an unexpected benefit for heart patients who just happen to be taking or been prescribed those types of drugs.

So, apart from relieving depression, SSRI drugs also may benefit heart patients without their needing to resort to those post-heart attack treatments and a long list of medications.

The lead investigator Dr. Roy C. Ziegelstein told Reuters Health,

Although additional studies are needed to verify the findings of our study, the platelet effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors may reduce the likelihood of certain complications at the expense of increased bleeding in patients with heart disease.

Though excited with this breakthrough, calling for larger studies, the researchers aware doctors to keep in mind, ‘this link’, while treating patients hospitalized with a heart attack or suffering from acute coronary syndrome.
